A Holiday Miracle…

December 3, 2008

So for the first time since we (my family joined by Babcia and the Boynton crew) have begun having Thanksgiving Dinner at my house… NOTHING BAD HAPPENED!!!!! I didn’t set the turkey on fire, I found and removed all of the “extra” parts and there were no injuries.

Actualy it was a very nice day. I cooked a 25lb turkey… I know, I know a bit much for 8 people but I like having leftovers. We had mashed potato, acorn squash grown by the youngest Barboza, carrots, turnip, sweet potato, stuffin’ muffins, rolls and hot chocolate cake for dessert. I think everyone had a nice time… I know I did!

Now on to Black Friday…

As is tradition my mother and I were up before the sun waiting with all the other crazy folks to shop at 5 am… Yes 5am! Now up until this point I had not begun any holiday shopping… So we shopped, we shopped Friday morning and all day Saturday, and I am happy to report… All of my shopping is now complete. I picked up the few outstanding gifts on my list last night. Whew!!! Now all I have to do is get it all wraped….

A very Barboza Thanksgiving

December 1, 2008

Big things have been happening.

We had our open house party a few weekends ago. It was a great time. The only downside was that we couldn’t invite all the people we wanted to, even so we ended up with just over 30 people there!

Thanksgiving was a blast too. My first time cooking for a lot of people (14 guests!!), my first time cooking thanksgiving, and my first time cooking a turkey. I handled the side dishes and the turkey while T totally kicked butt at the desserts. I’ll post the menu later on.

Since we were having such a big guest list T’s mom brought a turkey as well and her sister and husband brought a bunch of appetizers.

There was a small snag in our plan though: I completely forgot to thaw the turkey and didn’t realize it until the day before. Thankfully T and I were able to get a fresh turkey and I dunked it in brining fluid that evening.

The night before was very busy. We cooked a majority of the food that night so we could focus on our guests and the other dishes, we didn’t finish until about midnight.

I’m all about the food so onto our Thanksgiving menu:

Appetizers

  • Meatballs w/ red sauce
  • Scallops wrapped in bacon * that T’s sister brough
  • Shrimp cocktail * that T’s sister brought

The Main Event

  • Burbon brined Turkey (18.5 lbs)
  • Traditional Roasted Turkey (15 lbs)  * that T’s mom brought

Sides

  • Twice baked potatoes
  • Mashed sweet potatoes
  • Mashed butternut squash
  • home-made Cranberry / Blueberry sauce
  • Linguicia Cranberry Stuffing
  • Steamed Green Beans

Dessert:

  • Cranberry / Orange Cheesecake
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Banana Creme Pie
  • Chocolate Cheesecake Brownies

Sadly I didn’t have the presence of mind to take any pictures of the food.

The day after thanksgiving T and I had to take our cat, Manny to the vet. He’s been limping lately and we thought it might have something to do with his declaw. The vet took some x rays, gave him a pretty thorough check-up and showed us that there weren’t any direct physical problems (no broken bones, sprains, declaw issues) but gave him a shot of aspirin and prescribed some joint medications anyways.

Manny seemed perfect while on the aspirin, it wore off late Sunday night so we are still a little worried about him. Hopefully his joint medication starts to work and helps him out.

But thats whats been going on around here. Like I said, big things have been going on.

Is your cat plotting to kill you?

So I have had my nose pressed into a book for the last week… actually four books, the Twilight Series. I really enjoyed these books, the consamate love saga, good Vs. evil, the possibilty that there may still be one or two good guys left (of course they will probably be mythical) and the satifying changes to old myths. I almost feel bad for enjoying them so much, not because they are designed for young adults (this is the department of the book store you will find them in) but because I was so enthrawled that my family has been somwhat neglected by my inability to put the damn things down. But down they are and just in time for T and I to go see the movie based on the first book “Twilight”.

The movie was also great. T has not read the books but did enjoy the flick. Stating that yes it was a love story but there was enough action to hold his male attention span. He is as excited as I am for the next one. However, as is commonly the case… The book was better!!!

Once I was able to tear myself from the pages we (the family) also took a little road trip this weekend to visit the youngest Barboza and celebrate his and his T’s house warming. We had a great time, I alway enjoy it when I get to visit family. Their home is beautiful I am sure he will post pics soon (nag, nag, nag, hint, hint, hint).

It was a busy weekend but well worth it.

Welcome to me

Halloween 2008

November 3, 2008

Our first halloween at the house and it went rather well. We had what I would call a medium number of visitors given the size of our neighborhood. Unfortunately, we bought way too much candy so now I am bingeing on snickers, milky ways, 3 musketeers, and every reese’s product that exists.

We carved our own pumpkins as well, T went for the elaborate monster holding a candy bag while I totally wussed out and carved two semi-creepy eyes into the pumpkin.

Today…

October 29, 2008

Nine years ago today I was given the greatest give one can ever receive. I became a mother. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHORTY. I LOVE YOU!

Here are a couple of other important events that happened on an October 29th…

1863: International Red Cross founded by Henri Dunant
(This one seems pretty significant to me…)

1929: Black Tuesday’: New York’s Wall Street crash
1989: The African National Congress(ANC) first political rally for almost thirty years is attended by 70,000 supporters

That time of year…

October 27, 2008

Chips… Check   Soda…Check   Ice Cream…Check   Dip…Check   Meatballs…Check Kale soup…Check… and the cake is ordered… Friday Prep, costume, trick or treating, home sort candy, more prep… Sat cooking set up last minute cleaning… PARTY!!!  Sunday… Cleanup from aforementioned party…

Well it is that time again. Z’s annual birthday bash. I think I am as ready as I can be at this point. I will have some prep I can do this week but most of it will take place Fri (which I am taking off from work) and Sat. morning… Z is really looking forward to seeing his uncles (yes both of them) and Nana and Papa. He has invited his friends from school. We are kind of hoping the twerp from last year can’t make it but he gave her an invitation because “it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t momma” How can you argue with that…We are in for a busy weekend…

First contribution

October 5, 2008

Finally, the computer’s working. Sorry for the delay. I know my absence has left you both floundering, feeling abandoned, set adrift in a sea of sibling…whatever. The point: now we’re legit. So what’s the scoop? Updates? Ramblings?  Random observations?

I’m still in Skow-vegas. Things are going well. Though this isn’t likely to be the last stop (I’m guessing that to be Dante’s sixth or seventh circle–my ambitions are modest), it’s pretty clear at this point I won’t be heading back to Western Mass. either, and so the limbo of leavable-on-a-moments-notice temp gigs (a freeing if impoverished existence) has come to an end (a further blow to the economy: don’t know if Addecco can survive minus my $3 a-man-hour commission) and I’m back to selling shit (a notable reversal: mas deniro, poco trabajor). Meanwhile I’m looking for the next better opportunity and the place most likely to–finally–unpack my shit.

I think the previous paragraph fulfills both the update and the rambling portions of the post. Now–random observation….hmm….random…random… randomrandomrandom…but if I’m contemplating, thus exhibiting discernment, thus intention…randomrandomrand…fuck…okay, again…Just get one with the….not thinking, not thinking just…randomly randoming….You know what, next time.

New monitor

October 1, 2008

I’ve wanted a 24″ monitor for the longest time and I finally snagged a 24″ Samsung last night on the way home. I decided on the samsung because it has a fast response time and excellent contrast ratio.

It also looks pretty bitchin’ on my desk.
